Impact of Supreme Court striking down Affirmative Action

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:38:25 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) -- The Supreme Court decided colleges and universities can no longer consider applicants' race during the admissions process, ending affirmative action policies that date back decades. Two separate rulings came to the same conclusion.Former U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado Jason Dunn said the decision wasn’t a surprise. He told "Colorado Point of View" universities will have to change their admissions programs but said, “race can be a factor in which wholistically someone has looked at and evaluated whether or not race played a role in who they are as a person and their character.”He detailed what that could look like in a college admissions essay by describing, “how being a minority person shaped them, growing up in a certain neighborhood or something like that and changed their values and the way they think about the world. That’s certainly appropriate to talk about race that way.” What leaked Trump tape could mean for the classified documents case The ru...

An observatory in Antarctica reveals ‘ghostly’ new portrait of the Milky Way

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:38:25 GMT

(CNN) — For the first time, astronomers have assembled a glowing portrait of the Milky Way galaxy using cosmic “ghost particles” detected by a telescope embedded in Antarctica’s ice.Over the years, astronomers have showcased stunning images of the Milky Way through electromagnetic radiation from visible light or radio waves. But this is a new perspective of our galaxy based on particles of matter, rather than energy. The so-called ghost particles are neutrinos. These tiny, high-energy cosmic particles are often referred to as ghostly because they are extremely vaporous and can pass through any kind of matter without changing. The research was published Thursday in the journal Science.“I remember saying, ‘At this point in human history, we’re the first ones to see our galaxy in anything other than light,’” said study coauthor Naoko Kurahashi Neilson, associate professor of physics at Drexel University, in a statement reflecting on when she and two doctoral students initially ...

Orioles’ slump continues in 1-0 loss to Twins, spoiling Kyle Bradish’s gem as losing streak extends to 4

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:38:25 GMT

In front of their largest crowd since opening day, the Orioles had their worst offensive game of the season. With an announced attendance of 40,012 on Hawaiian shirt day, Baltimore continued its slump at the plate, totaling just three hits one day after managing only four. The poor performance at the plate spoiled another stellar start from Kyle Bradish, as Joey Gallo’s solo home run in the fourth inning was all the Minnesota Twins needed to win 1-0.Twins starter Bailey Ober pitched seven shutout innings, and Minnesota’s bullpen followed suit. The three hits the Orioles managed are the fewest they’ve totaled in any of their six shutout losses this year. One of their best scoring chances came in the ninth inning. Adley Rutschman reached on an infield single off closer Jhoan Duran, and Jorge Mateo pinch ran for the catcher and stole second. But Anthony Santander flied out to right fielder Max Kepler, who made a sliding catch in foul territory, and cleanup hitter Ryan O...

Bruins go bargain-hunting, land five players in free agency

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:38:25 GMT

Filene’s Basement may be a thing of Boston’s glorious past, but the Bruins found their own bargain section of the free agent market on Saturday.Working on a tight budget, GM Don Sweeney signed five players for $5.8 million – a little less than Taylor Hall’s $6 million cap hit that was dealt away earlier in the week – bringing back a fan favorite, an aging one-time explosive forward, a promising young bottom-six forward, a veteran defenseman and a depth forward.Meanwhile, the B’s still have approximately $8 million left under the cap, which should be enough to sign restricted free agents Jeremy Swayman, Trent Frederic and Jakub Lauko with a little left to sign one of their top two centermen on a bonus-laden deal, should either Patrice Bergeron or David Krejci surprise us and decide not to retire.Anyone who was paying attention knew these painful days were coming. They are not going to be the same dominant team they were when they won 65 games last season, taki...

Justin Verlander twirls gem, Mets launch three homers in win over Giants

The San Francisco Giants were one of the hottest teams in baseball in June and the Mets one of the worst. But Saturday at Citi Field, the roles reversed and the Mets defeated the Giants 4-1.Typically it’s the Mets’ starting pitchers who can’t get past the third time through the order or even the second. This time, it was Anthony DeSclafani who exited after giving up three solo home runs in the third inning to put the Mets up 3-0. This came after the Colts Neck, New Jersey native allowed only two in the month of June.Francisco Alvarez hit the first one of the inning. With two outs, Brandon Nimmo pulled one over the right field fence for his fourth in the last five games (12 total), and Francisco Lindor followed with one of his own to right-center field (17 total). For Alvarez, it was his 13th of the season, which ties him with Travis d’Arnaud for the most home runs by a Mets rookie (2014).DeSclafani (4-8) had been hitless to that point for the Giants (36-47). ...
