NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — King Charles III visited a war cemetery in Nairobi on Wednesday, laying a wreath in honor of Kenyans who fought alongside the British in the two world wars, a day after the monarch expressed “greatest sorrow and the deepest regret” for the violence of the colonial era.Charles, who with Queen Camilla arrived on Monday in what is his first state visit to a Commonwealth country as monarch, cited the “abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence” committed against Kenyans as they sought independence. However, he didn’t explicitly apologize for Britain’s actions in its former colony as many Kenyans wanted. At the state banquet hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto on Tuesday, Charles said there “can be no excuse” for the “wrongdoings of the past.” He said that addressing them with honesty and openness could “continue to build an ever closer bond in the years ahead.”After the wreath-laying, he handed replacement medals to four veterans who have since lost thei...

Researchers hope tracking senior Myanmar army officers can ascertain blame for human rights abuses

BANGKOK (AP) — A group of human rights researchers officially launched a website Wednesday that they hope will help get justice for victims of state violence in Myanmar, where one of the world’s less-noticed but still brutal armed struggles is taking place.Since the army seized power in February 2021 from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, thousands of people have been killed by the security forces seeking to quash pro-democracy resistance. According to the United Nations, more than 1.8 million have been displaced by military offensives, which critics charge have involved gross violations of human rights.War crimes have become easier to document in recent years thanks largely to the ubiquity of cellphone cameras and the near-universal access to social media, where photo and video evidence can easily be posted and viewed. But it’s harder to establish who is responsible for such crimes, especially generals and other high-ranking officers behind the scenes who make the pl...

After the University at Albany football team claimed its latest victim last Saturday, trouncing Maine on the road, it's time to start thinking playoff scenarios for this team. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! At 6-3 overall and 4-1 in league play, UAlbany currently sits in a tie for third in the Coastal Athletic Association standings. An automatic bid is still certainly in reach; Delaware leads the conference with an undefeated, 5-0 league mark. So, the Blue Hens would have to drop one of their final three regular season tilts for the Danes to have a shot at winning the conference. The more likely scenario is an at-large bid for UAlbany. With only one FCS loss and a top-25 win, its resume looks really good right now. But with 24th ranked William & Mary coming to town Saturday, taking care of the Tribe is the only thing on the team's mind."This week is our seventh ...

The defenders must count declarer’s points and distribution and draw inferences from the bidding and play.Today’s West leads the deuce of spades against 3NT. Declarer wins with dummy’s queen and leads the seven of clubs. If East plays “second hand low,” South wins and cashes five diamonds and two more spades, making his game.THREE SPADESOn the bidding, South probably has five diamonds and four clubs, and the opening lead marks him with three spades — so, a singleton heart. East must rise with the ace of clubs and lay down the ace of hearts. The defense can take three more hearts for down one.Can East find the winning defense? He should if he does his thinking when he see dummy, so he won’t have to play on impulse if declarer leads a club from dummy at Trick Two.Puzzle answer: The chil...
