Runaway trains in track yards, near misses between trains and workers, and an employee hurt while working on overhead power lines on the Blue Line. Federal officials say the MBTA has to address worker safety issues, and do it fast — within the next two months. And commuters are worried about what this means for them.“We don’t need Band-Aids, we need the thing done safely for the people doing the work and the people who have to rely on these things every day,” said Brett Nichols, who rides the MBTA.In a letter to MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng a federal official writes, “Given the immediate risk to worker safety on the ROW (right of way), FTA (the federal transit administration) requires direct and focused actions.”They say a plan submitted by the MBTA earlier this month needs to be redone immediately because it includes fixes not scheduled to be complete until late this year, or next year. Kristi Hendriks knew before her husband, Liam, started chemotherapy that he would return to the pitching mound for the Chicago White Sox.“That was his saving grace,” Kristi said Monday. “He said: ‘I’m going to play again if it takes me four rounds, if it takes me six rounds, if it goes more, if it goes less. I’m just going to do that because I need to do that for myself.’“And then when all the fan support got behind him, it was 100% a moment of ‘I’m doing this for the city of Chicago.’”The White Sox reinstated Liam Hendriks from the injured list Monday before their game against the Los Angeles Angels. It was a remarkable return for the closer who announced in January he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.Hendriks tipped his cap to the crowd and teared up during a ceremony at Guaranteed Rate Field that recognized the more than $100,000 raised through the sale of “Close Out Cancer” T-shirts. Whether the long-anticipated return of Liam Hendriks provides the Chicago White Sox with the jolt they desperately need to get back to respectability won’t be known for a while.A closer can do only so much, after all, unless the ball is in his hands with a lead. If Hendriks doesn’t get save opportunities, he can’t do much to change the direction of the Sox, other than provide inspiration for his teammates who watched his journey back from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. But the plight of the Sox was on the back burner Monday night at Sox Park. The Memorial Day game against the Los Angeles Angels seemed secondary to Hendriks’ first appearance this season in a Sox uniform, giving general manager Rick Hahn and the players a temporary reprieve from the nonstop fan angst that built up over the first two months.LiamFest, the celebration of Hendriks’ comeback from cancer, was observed before and during the game Monday — Hendriks’ first on an active major-leag...Yankees Notebook: Anthony Rizzo out with neck stiffness, Carlos Rodon continues to progress

SEATTLE — Anthony Rizzo didn’t start the Yankees’ series opener in Seattle on Monday, as the first baseman is dealing with neck stiffness.Rizzo left Sunday’s win over the Padres after getting tangled up with Fernando Tatis Jr. on an awkward pickoff play at first. Rizzo spent some time down in pain, and he exited for what the Yankees called “precautionary reasons.”“Should be fine. Just something we didn’t want to mess with too much. Head-wise, he’s fine,” Aaron Boone said. “He’ll get treatment. I would expect him to be available probably on some level tonight off the bench.”Boone added that Rizzo won’t receive additional tests after passing some on Sunday. The manager also said that a day of rest after a cross-country flight for a long road trip wasn’t the worst thing in the world for Rizzo.“Hopefully, [it’s] something that kind of serves him well,” Boone continued. With Rizzo o...100-year-old WWII veteran honored in Solana Beach Memorial Day ceremony
