Twin Cities Salvation Army officials say their Christmas fundrasing effort is behind last year’s pace by almost $700,000.The organization generally collects 75% of their annual revenues during the holiday campaign.“The last two weeks of December are the most active fundraising time of year, so we expect more gifts will still be coming in,” said Lt. Col. Randall Polsley, Salvation Army Northern Division commander, in a statement. “But at this point we’re nearly 18% behind last year’s pace, which tells us we won’t hit our target unless we see significant gains by December 31st.”Money raised during the final three months of the year account for a majority the group’s revenue and help pay for assistance programs offered throughout the year.Requests for assistance from the Salvation Army have stayed high despite the pandemic ending, officials said.“Current conditions are driving an increased demand for services, but they also put pressure on charitable giving, and we’re seein...

Letters: The burden of wolf control lands on our ranchers

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:15:43 GMT

The burden of wolf control lands on our ranchersI am a bleeding-heart liberal environmentalist who has hugged more than one tree in the 60-odd years that I have been a resident of Colorado. I have pretty much supported every environmental cause short of taking up arms, which I have owned aplenty, during my active hunting years. Like many transplanted residents of Colorado, I come from a farming or ranching background. I am guessing there are more of us than there are actual farmers and ranchers in Colorado. It is time we raised our voices for our rural neighbors. While I support a more limited wolf introduction program, there does not seem to be enough protection for the livestock and human population of Grand and Jackson counties, which will suffer the most from livestock losses. The loss of one young purebred cow can result in six or eight less calves during her productive years. That is many thousands of dollars.Back to my roots: When I was about 10 years old, I witnessed a pack o...
